Elijah Rising Announcement
HOUSTON, TX, December 7, 2017—Elijah Rising announced today that their recent inaugural gala was a resounding success, raising over $260,000.00. As we mentioned to the attendees of our gala, we are embarking on an exciting and future phase of our organization, one in which we are committed to renovating and expanding the organization’s refuge for trafficked women.
The strategic moves at Elijah Rising are accompanied by the new announcement of a change in leadership. Although we are sad to announce the resignation of President Cat French effective December 7, 2017, we are supporting her in her endeavor to expand her outreach to a national level. Ms. French was the founder and has been executive director of Elijah Rising since its beginning through June 2017, when she turned over the reins as executive director to Micah Bailey Gamboa so that she could focus on cultivating her national and international connections in the anti-trafficking field. Her departure now is a further step in that direction as she goes on to pursue her passion in that area.
Elijah Rising is grateful for Ms. French’s invaluable contribution and pleased to see her continue her career in the larger arena to pursue speaking engagements and projects in other venues that are related to the eradication of this evil. Ms. French has had the privilege and challenge of stewarding the helm for Elijah Rising from its inception through the present and feels confident about leaving the organization now that it has carved out its identity and can continue without her. She helped to birth the organization, and it is now emerging as a nationally-recognized organization.
Elijah Rising is also the first to establish a museum dedicated to educate the public about brothels and sex trafficking of women and children. As of the date of this announcement, it is the sole museum in the country that does so, and it has been visited by people from all over the country. For details, more information or to take part in one of our renowned van tours, please see below.
“This seemed like a logical transition point for both me personally and Elijah Rising as an institution,” Ms. French said. “After five years with Elijah Rising, I feel I have made my contribution to the organization and helped forge its identity with the van tours, its outreach work, the museum and its exhibitions, and most recently the work to establish Kendleton Farms as a survivor residence. I am extremely proud of the work we have all done together. I am ready to move on to connect with national and international organizations where I can share my experience and continue to minister and speak to raise awareness about the enormous issue of our time, human trafficking, and my particular passion, that is the sex trafficking of women and children.”
During Ms. French’s tenure, Elijah Rising went from a small unfunded van tour to a rallying force against sex trafficking in Houston. With the most recent expansion and its ongoing efforts, Elijah Rising seeks to establish Kendleton Farms as a leading aftercare facility by providing residential housing and a treatment facility for female survivors of sex trafficking.
Audrey Manito, Chairman of the Board of Directors, stated, “We have been in extremely capable hands for the last five years, and we commend Cat for her dedication and work at Elijah Rising and her devotion to raising awareness about the sex trafficking problems here and in the nation at large. Her passion and devotion are appreciated and have been a guiding light in the formation of our organization.”
The Elijah Rising Board of Directors wishes Ms. French the best in her future endeavors and will keep in touch with her as she speaks and works in the Houston area.
About Elijah Rising
Elijah Rising is a nonprofit organization supported by public donations and dedicated to the eradication of sex trafficking in Houston through awareness, outreach, intervention and aftercare. Since 2012, thousands have participated in Elijah Rising’s van tours, dubbed “Human Trafficking 101 On Wheels.” The organization also leads volunteers on outreaches and interventions in Houston and the surrounding areas multiple times a month. In 2013, Elijah Rising negotiated the closure of a brothel and converted it into its headquarters. A year later, Elijah Rising launched the Museum of Modern-Day Slavery.
The Museum and offices of Elijah Rising are located in the area southwest of the Galleria, known as Galleria West, which happens to be one of the most sexualized districts of Houston. The headquarters building stands at 5818 Southwest Freeway in a building that once housed an Asian brothel that used to be a stop on their Van Tours. After intervening with the property owner in 2013, Cat French was successful in obtaining a signed a lease on the property for the benefit of Elijah Rising and that became its headquarters.
Now the same building houses the nation’s only museum dedicated to exposing the brutal realities of sexual slavery and exploitation. The museum allows the public to explore what it looks like inside a former brothel and displays a collection of artifacts and information from the fieldwork conducted by Elijah Rising staff and volunteers in the battle to end commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking. Please note carefully: Exhibits may be too graphic for children, who are not admitted without parental supervision. Parental guidance is strongly urged.
