Not to overdramatize … but June 6, 1944 Operation Neptune commenced, establishing the Normandy beachhead in France and decisively tipping the balance of power in WWII.
Elijah Rising, much to our delight and astonishment, has been given a beachhead in the very neighborhood we have been targeting with our prayer “air assault” since 2010! We have leased a former brothel in the heart of the Galleria commercial sex district – an area we have referred to as the knot at the end of the rope of the sex trade in Houston.
But beachheads must quickly turn into lodgments. Signing a lease and getting a handful of keys is only the beginning.
We are quickly realizing the inertia that exists for landlords who want to do the right thing by wrestling their properties out of the commercial sex trade back into righteousness.
The mess of permitting is a substantial disincentive for landlords and commercial tenants who want to do the right thing.
This is where the fight to transition the beachhead into a lodgment comes in. We signed the lease on June 29th – our D-Day! Since then we have been navigating the City permitting office, waiting patiently but eagerly to begin the remodeling project.
Remember May of 2010 when Mayor Parker ordered the demolition of 185 crack houses – the most structures ever removed in a single day? Surely there was some streamlined permitting process in effect for “Demolition Day.”
Presently the inside of our new headquarters resembles a dairy farm with stalls or compartments where the sex work took place. We never dreamed it would be this complicated to get permission to remove these compartment walls to create space for our prayer room.
Thoughts, suggestions, tips, advice are very welcome, especially if you know someone in the City permitting office!
